What you can do between pump-outs

Taking care of your system between our visits comes down to watching what leaves your house and protecting the soil outside. Inside the house, water volume matters more than anything else. When you do multiple loads of laundry back to back, you flood your tank with water and push solid waste out into your drain field before it has time to settle. Spreading your washing across the week gives your tank the quiet time it needs to separate solids from liquid. Fix leaky faucets and running toilets promptly, because a steady trickle can overwhelm your field without you realizing it.

You also want to keep harsh materials and grease out of your plumbing completely. Never pour bacon fat, cooking oils, coffee grounds, harsh cleaners, paints, or leftover chemicals down your sink. Keep wipes, paper towels, and hygiene products out of the toilet, because your tank bacteria cannot break them down and they clog your filters.

Outside in your yard, protect the ground above your pipes and tank lids. Never drive your truck, car, or riding lawnmower over the drain field, because heavy tires compact the dirt and crush plastic pipes buried underneath. Keep livestock off that area as well, and never build a shed or park a boat on top of it. Let grass grow over the field so roots pull moisture without invading the pipes.
